This is a rare vintage enamel advertising sign for Sunlight Soap, a pioneering packaged soap introduced in 1884 by William Hesketh Lever of Lever Brothers (later part of Unilever). The wording “Gold Medal, Paris 1889” refers to an award won at the Exposition Universelle, the same world’s fair that introduced the Eiffel Tower.

The 1889 Exposition Universelle was an international world’s fair staged in Paris from May through October 1889. Organized to mark 100 years since the French Revolution, it highlighted France’s industrial progress and artistic excellence before a global audience. Its most lasting symbol is the Eiffel Tower, constructed as the grand entrance to the exhibition.
