This medieval Jetton is a small but evocative relic of late medieval commerce, originally used as a counting counter on reckoning boards before written arithmetic became widespread.
Loaction found: Norfolk
Struck in brass or latten and often imitating contemporary coin designs, Jettons were produced in large quantities in centres such as Nuremberg and circulated widely among merchants and officials. The small cut at the top of this example was made deliberately and is commonly seen on Jettons: it may have been used to test the metal, to cancel or decommission the piece, to distinguish it from circulating coinage, or to adapt it for suspension as a pendant or sewn ornament.
Rather than damage, the cut forms part of the jetton’s working life, adding character and tangible evidence of its historical use.
