This small spindle weight, also known as a spindle whorl, is a timeless tool of traditional textile production.

It is likely to date from the Roman or early Medieval period, although exact dating is difficult.

Location found: Norfolk

Carefully shaped with a central perforation to fit onto a wooden spindle, a spindle weight/whorl provided the steady momentum needed to spin raw fibers—such as wool or flax—into strong, usable yarn.

Its balanced form and tactile surface reflect the practical craftsmanship of everyday life, where spinning was an essential domestic skill.
