Crotal bells were small bronze or brass bells with a hollow body and a tiny pellet inside that produces a clear, ringing sound. Widely used in early modern Britain, they served both decorative and practical purposes: on horse harnesses, clothing, and musical instruments, they added rhythm, announced movement, and deterred pests.
They were also commonly attached to livestock such as goats, sheep, and occasionally deer, allowing herders and hunters to track animals across fields and woodland. Their distinctive sound and charming form offer a direct connection to the daily life, work, and culture of the period.
